Women's Opportunity Award Program

The Women’s Opportunity Award Program, Soroptimist's major service project, is a cash grant awarded annually to a female head of household who is working, must enter or return to the work force and is attending a technical or undergraduate institution to further her career goals. The women may use the awards to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education—including books, childcare and carfare. Many Women’s Opportunity Awards winners are domestic abuse survivors who use the funds to help rebuild their lives through improved employment opportunities. Each year, more than $1M is awarded through the Women’s Opportunity Awards program. Since the program began in 1972, it is estimated that over $20 million has been disbursed and more than 25,000 women have been assisted through this program.
The application period for this year is active. The Greenville Club's Women's Opportunity Award for 2011 is US$900 and will be presented to the winner at the 2012 Upstate Women of Distinction Celebration Tea in March. The local finalist is eligible for the Region's award program for one of three cash grants: US$5,000 first place, US$3,000 second and third places. The regional finalist is eligible for the Federation level program's US$10,000 award.
Deadline annually to receive completed application with essay is December 15. Applications are available annually beginning in August.
