What does Phyllis Martin of Greenville South Carolina have in common with Princess Diana, former child actor and U.S. Ambassador Shirley Temple Black and Philippines President Corazon Aquino? |

They are all past Soroptimist Making a Difference for Women recipients!
Recognition Program The Making a Difference for Women Award program acknowledges women who, through their personal or professional activities, are working to improve the lives of other women and girls. Although not Soroptimists, the work of these women helps to promote the issues that are important to the Soroptimist organization.
Honorees are women who have worked in extraordinary ways to benefit women and girls. Examples of the type of work honored include: spearheading an effort to open a domestic violence shelter, starting a mentoring program for at-risk girls, or lobbying companies to provide on-site childcare. The program enables local Soroptimist clubs and the Soroptimist organization to thank these women and encourage others to explore ways to assist women and girls.
As with all Soroptimist award programs this recognition is international in scope. It begins at the Greenville Soroptimist club level, with a Certificate of Recognition presented to the winning candidate at the annual Women of Distinction Celebration in March 2010. A cash grant will be be given to the charitable organization of the recipient's choice. The Greenville club's Ruby Award (Making a Difference for Women Award) recipient then advances to other levels of the Soroptimist organization. One finalist is selected to receive the annual award, a $5,000 donation to the charitable organization of her choice. The finalist also receives an invitation to accept her award at Soroptimist International of the Americas’ annual meeting.
Eligibility Requirements - 2010 Focus Area ~ Economic and Social Development Women who are improving the lives of other women or girls through their professional or personal activities are eligible for the Making a Difference for Women Award. These women have identified and focused on a need in their communities, which has significantly contributed to the improvement of women and girls’ lives. For 2010, we are seeking women who have focused their efforts on the Economic and Social Development of women in our communities, locally, nationally and even worldwide.
Although Soroptimist clubs are free to honor a woman for a lifetime of good work, the majority of the work should have occurred within the past two years. Please consider the prestige and recognition this program affords your nominee and complete the enclosed form. We encourage women to nominate yourself, a coworker, someone within your agency, or someone else you feel deserves the recognition. Previous award winners, Soroptimists and Soroptimist employees are not eligible for the award.
The application period is active. Awards for the Greenville Club will be presented to all winners at the 2010 Upstate Women of Distinction Celebration in March, Greenville SC. Deadline annually for completed essay is December 15. Nomination forms are available here or send an email ATTN: MADFW nomination to soroptimist@gmail.com. Click here for the:
